In 2006, Dr. Powell visited Kathmandu and presented at the Hubert Humphrey Fellows Program. At that time, the Fellows Program asked that ICHC conduct training for those individuals in Nepal who are treating alcohol and drug abusers in the country. In February 2007, a weeklong training institute was held in Kathmandu with trainers from the U.S. and sponsored by the Fellows Program in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Nepal and the American Club of Nepal. Over 40 individuals from throughout Nepal attended the week-long training provided by Dr. Powell, Barbara Powell, Kelli Star Fox and Angela Childers. At the completion of the training, an Action Plan to address the alcohol and drug abuse issues of Nepal was written by the team and presented to the Fellows Program, the American Ambassador in Nepal and the Nepal Ministry of Health. Future follow-on training events are being discussed for 2010.
